Just In: Levi's Vintage 1944 501's and 1967 505's

Today we just received two new styles of the coveted 

Levi's Vintage Denim, the 1944 501 and the 1967 505.

Both of these jeans have a unique place in the history of denim.  Below we have a brief description of what makes these jeans so special, enjoy!

LVC 1944 501 in the Rigid.  30x34 - 36x34.  $220.  Made in the USA using Cone Mills Denim.

During WWII, the US Govt. asked all clothing manufacturers to remove a certain amount of metal, fabric, and thread from their garments in order to conserve the raw materials for the war effort.  Levi's did what they could do to help, here sre some of the features that make the LVC 1944 501's so unique:

-  Off came the watch pocket rivets, the crotch rivet and the cinch and it's two rivets.

-  Sometimes the buttons were branded but most the time they were just blank and generic.

-  The 1944 LVC 501 had a painted on Arcuate on the back pockets  because the Govt. thought the traditional stitching was too ornamnetal and a waist of thread.

-  Pocket bag material varied throughout the war

-  Cone Mills 12oz. Red Selvedge Denim

-  2 back pockets with covered rivets

LVC 1967 505 in Rigid.  30x34 - 36x34.  $198

-  This jean is considered the example of the "modern" jean.  It had a slightly lower rise and slimmer thigh and bottom leg openings.  Many modern day jeans have been based off of this jean.

-  Levi's used bar tacks rather than rivets on the back pockets.

-  big "E" red Tab, which only existed from 1966-1971.

-  Cone Mills 12 oz. red Selvedge

Vintage Red Wing Boots

Just In: LVC 1947 501's

We just received some of the extremely coveted LVC 1947 501's in a Raw and in the Broken Down wash.

The Levi's Vintage Clothing 1947 501 is so coveted because it is considered the "hybrid" of all the 501's.  It combines the old Levi characteristics with the new modern Levi's.  Gone were the Cinch or suspender details of the pre WWII 501's  and introduced was a slimmer post WWII fit that was ready for the Rock and Rollers and Baby Boomers! 

Some details to look for:

-  2 back pockets with covered rivets

-  "E" red tab

Do you ever come across a name of a store and say…yes…that’s exactly what I want to do when I go there.
It’s no secret that Shop Detour or Detour Clothing store has me hooked. I’m a loyal shopper, but I’m also an annoying shopper. I wait. I ho and I hum. Then I ask questions and then I ask for measurements and so forth. So when Jesse and Jason Meyer owners of Detour answer each and every one of my emails with patience and friendliness I can’t help but wonder why (truly I am annoying). They treat each and every one of their customers as though they will be buying from them for forever. An art that is not easy to duplicate and something in which is NOT practiced enough. So when I had a chance to catch up with them on a real (and when I say real, via email) one on one interview I jumped at the chance.
Oh and if you didn’t know but this Milwaukee joint was just voted one of the top menswear stores in the U.S. Hmmmm you think they might be something right.

So…lets get to it!
Jason and I just wanted to say thank you Jonathan for allowing us this opportunity to showcase Shopdetour.com and ourselves to you and your audience.

What is the typical morning routine at Detour?

Our typical morning at Detour usually starts off with Jason and I chit chatting about different ideas that we came up with the night before. We usually bounce ideas about our current businesses off each and future business plans/ideas we have. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on who you ask Jason and I have caught the “entrepreneur bug”. Then we usually check emails, box up orders, go over messages and notes from the day before and get ready to open the doors to the shop.

You guys are obviously very passionate about clothes and fashion in general what guided you two to pursue a store that was just recently named one of the best stores in America (I can attest to this btw)? Side question to this - what was the inspiration behind the creation of the store and the message you are trying to communicate to your clientele?

We started Detour in 97 after we had recently moved back from living in Lake Tahoe Ca. and we noticed a void in the Milwaukee market for a better denim store. It started more as an expression of Jason and I just wanting to have something of our own. We didn’t really like working for other people or having a “regular job” so we put our heads together and came up with the idea of Detour loosely based off of some of the stores we saw in San Fran when lived in Nor Cal.

I would say our main inspiration is seeing our dad own his own one man construction company for forty years. Maybe it’s in our genes or it’s just seeing him working for himself our whole life that gave Jason and I the inspiration to do things ourselves also. We try and communicate individuality and quality to our customers. It’s so easy for people to just go to a “big box” retailer and buy a shirt or a pair of jeans mindlessly and just bypass small independent retailers but we feel it’s our duty almost to try and open people’s eyes to better quality clothing that they can feel proud of wearing.

I feel like you’ve built a pretty substantial internet presence, what can you attribute this success to? There are a litany of online mens stores out there but you guys seem to do it better than most. How have you built that presence and do you continue to see it as a core part going forward?

Online has been an interesting ride. When we started detouronline.com back in 99 we had no clue on what we were doing or even the potential of an internet presence at that time. It wasn’t until we received some inspiration/advice from a couple people that we started to look into more. Plus we saw the success ShopBop.com (which is located about 90 miles away from us in Madison Wi.) when it was starting off and we would chit chat with the owner of Bop when he would come in to Detour to shop (because they didn’t carry guys clothes) which put the bug into Jason and I to to take our website way more seriously. We then changed our URL to shopdetour.com in 06 and have slowly been building it since then. The main way we have built our website is by picking a niche and trying to stick with it (which hasn’t been easy at times) a store of our size would not be able to compete with bigger stores online so we don’t even try. We just try and do our own thing and hope our customers dig it. As far as online going forward Jason and I believe it will comprise about 90 to 95 percent of our business in the next 5 years.

One of the more popular undertakings from a lot of the bricks and mortar stores lately is the creation of a private line. Do you foresee yourselves venturing down that path anytime soon?

This something Jason and I have wanted to do for a long time. We just feel that if we do create a line of our own that it has to be able to stand on its own. We don’t want to create a line just to create a line. It would have to make sense from the fabric used to the finished product. We don’t want to just create another oxford or raw jean for the market unless it’s something we can’t get somewhere else.

You have really increased the breadth of brands come Fall 2010 (which I must say I am very excited for). Two part question. When bringing on new brands what is the criteria or thought process that goes into each and every brand. You have some obscure brands that are not necessarily considered mainstream, why pick them over something established?

We don’t really have a criteria for bring in new brands. It is more of a gut feeling for us. When we see a new line we usually know within the first 5 minutes of looking at it if it will work in the store. Don’t get me wrong there are certain things we look for in brands like where its made, what kind of fabrics are used, what “philosophy” is the company trying to portray but it truly boils down to gut feeling and budget. Choosing more obscure brands goes back to finding your niche online and trying to stick with it. We’ve realized over the years that trying to sell more mainstream brands just puts you into a position were you have to compete with department stores and chain stores which usually revolves around price wars which just kills us little guys.

An ongoing question I like to ask our stores is about their commitment to customer service. Yours is BY FAR one of the best in retail that I have experienced. It seems as though you look at each client not as an individual purchaser but as a customer for life. How did this get instilled into the Detour ‘mandate’?

Jason and I just try to be ourselves. We try and treat everyone how we want to be treated. We don’t really have a rule book for this we just know that customers are our life blood if you treat them bad you don’t have a business for very long. There are to many options out there for people to shop at if you don’t give them a good customer experience they will go to a store that does.

Finally, what 5 items should every man have in their wardrobe?

A extremely well fitting suit (spend some money here guys this will last you forever), denim preferably raw, classic watch, white oxford, slim chinos. All these are more about fit then anything else. As long as an item fits you well for your body type it should be in your wardrobe.

I just wanted to thank both Jason and Jesse for not only consistently presenting one of the best retail presences in the U.S. and online but for their impeccable customer service and FREE WORLDWIDE shipping. Throw in the fact that they have a customer loyalty program and once you buy you’re hooked for life.

Introducing: 3sixteen denim

We're proud to introduce 3sixteen denim to our shop. The partners behind 3sixteen denim spent a long time wearing many different brands of jeans and then incorporating what they feel are the best characteristics into their denim. 3sixteen denim is constructed of 14 oz. Kaihara Japanese indigo selvedge sanforized denim cut and sewn in the USA. They chose to have their denim constructed in the USA in order to keep close tabs on the quality. Additionally since denim is traditionally considered a staple in American workwear it only seemed right to have it constructed by hand in the USA. Features include chainstitched hem, custom hardware and rivets as well as leather patches made by Tanner Goods in Portland, Oregon.

We are offering 2 fits: the SL-100x, which is considered by many to be the perfect straight leg and the ST-100x which is the slim tapered fit both in a beautiful dry raw.

Established in 1951 with 34 machines, by 1970 the mill had developed indigo rope dying machines and started a delivery of rope dyed denim in Japan. By the early 90s the mill introduced ring yarn spinning and vintage production by narrow width shuttle machines. Kaihara is renowned for the sanforised selvedge it’s produced for decades.

Conen Mills - North Carolina

Started by Baltimore based-brothers Moses and Caesar Cone, the company was originally a wholesale grocer until 1895 when they started weaving their own denim. By 1912 the Cones operated four mills in Greensboro, North Carolina - Proximity, Revolution, White Oak and Proximity Print Works. The company started supplying denim for Levi’s jeans in 1910, becoming the exclusive supplier for the 501 in 1922. Cone is still one of the world’s biggest denim manufacturers, having integrated with textiles manufacturers Burlington Industries in 2004 to form the International Textiles Group (ITG).

Amoskeag - New Hampshire

A New Hampshire factory town which was the first major source of denim in the US. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company opened in 1838 and by 1900 claimed to be the world’s biggest textile producer; it later declined due to industrial unrest and competition from southern mills. Amoskeag denim was used exclusively for Levi’s 501 until 1915.
Sights Denim Systems (Laundry) - Kentucky

Once a batch of jeans has been milled and produced, they’re sent to the Sights laundry to be distressed by razor blades, hair dryers, sandpaper and sandblasters. Vintage jeans are used as templates for the treatments; clients include True Religion, Seven, Ernest Sewn, Rogan, Ralph Lauren and Levi’s.

Distressing Experience

There are lots of reasons to stay away from the L.A. denim world—for one, we just plain don’t like distressed clothes—but if you get past any lingering style reservations, it can be a pretty fascinating scene. Particularly if you’ve got a camera handy.

Sundance recently took a trek into the dark heart of Ed Hardy-ness and came away with Dirty Denim, a 15-minute series of web shorts that convince us it’s worse than we ever imagined. Small labels scramble over distressing techniques, play hardball with buyers, and try to keep their styles safe from the eight other labels they share a washhouse with—and just about everyone’s scrapping.

Of course, the real horror is what they do to the jeans. Potassium sprays, paint splatters and rotary grinders are all turned against defenseless raw denim with little to no remorse. The rest isn’t too different from the mind-boggling hustle of the rest of Hollywood—but it should give pause to anyone who’s day-dreamed about starting up their own denim line.

...the rest of the country doesn't really pay attention...so if you live in a yellow state like I did for 18 years, please try to change that! We can't be known as the country defined by Wal-Mart anymore. I've seen 15 year old girls in Paris that would destroy "stylish" women in NYC...we need to take some pride in our appearance... dress better, demand quality.

A couple years back, Michael Williams was bored by the handful of menswear blogs he browsed. They were either "too straight or too gay," as he puts it — "either about grills or about some crazy new man accessory." So in December 2007, Williams launched AContinuousLean.com, a style-slanted blog after his own interests — handmade goods, Americana, denim, and workwear — plus whatever else struck his fancy in music, food, and booze. Spending a few hours a night blogging, his following has grown to around 350,000 visitors a month, and he's a regular contributor to GQ.com and Selectism.com. This weekend, Williams and UrbanDaddy editor Randy Goldberg have curated a menswear-only Pop-up Flea, stocking merch from Rogues Gallery, Billykirk, No Mas, Michael Andrews Bespoke, and more, and some of Williams's favorite brands will carry over into his blog's new online shop, launching Monday. We talked to him about shoes, eBay trolling, and drinking (occasionally all at once).

What sets A Continuous Lean apart from other style blogs?
It's not about fashion — the F-word is never used — it's just about well-made stuff. It's focused on craftsmanship more than anything, whether that's a $6,000 Savile Row suit or work boots from Wolverine.

You've curated a menswear pop-up this weekend. Are you worried about competing with Save Fashion?
It's like the antithesis of Save Fashion: It's not about fashion, it's not a sale … it's just clothes and curated stuff. Randy [Goldberg, of UrbanDaddy] and I were joking around, "You go ahead and save fashion — we'll be over here, drinking whiskey."

Who are your favorite designers?
I like Nigel Caubourn from the U.K., Steven Alan, and Billy Reid. But mostly I'm adherent to a uniform: flap-pocket Oxford shirts from J.Press or Hamilton 1883, jeans from A.P.C. or Jean Shop, and Barbour jackets. But that's representative of the guy that reads my site — it's a very sort of man thing, to wear the same stuff over and over.

What's the first designer item you bought?
I think in the nineties sometime I bought some Prada shoes — that was a big thing for me at the time. Now a designer buy for me is Alden or Church shoes.

Where do you like to shop in New York?
Steven Alan is the store that best represents me. I also like Hickoree's Hard Goods, an online store that has awesome vintage stuff. And City Foundry, which carries all this Machine Age industrial furniture. I'm also the craziest eBay addict.

Anything in particular you're hunting for?
I love to buy stuff on eBay, just so every day I get a crazy package with something random in it. Sometimes I'll get drunk and go on eBay and forget I bought something the next day — then a package will show up with all these buttons or a wool blanket or something. It's my own induced vintage Christmas.

How would you describe your personal style?
Disheveled. I think people are a little underwhelmed when they meet me. I love workwear, but I don't need to wear bib overalls. I can exorcise those demons online.

What trends are you appreciating right now?
A lot of people are buying American-made stuff, and I hope that continues.

Any current trends you hate?
Luxury for the sake of luxury. It's like luxury condos: Do you ever see a condo that's just marketed as a condo? No, it's always a luxury condo. It's bullshit. And it's indicative of the whole luxury market.

What's something you're saving to buy?
I don't really have any needs in my life. I mean, sure, I'd like to go to Savile Row and buy a crazy-expensive suit, or go buy an IWC Portuguese watch. I'd like to buy that, but I don't have any money, and I'm okay with that. I have a Timex; it works.

What should every guy have in his closet?
The real giveaway with style is footwear, and I think women will attest to that. If you met a guy with bad shoes, it'd be something you'd have to get over. He should have a Chukka boot, a nice English brogue, and a saddle shoe.

What's something you never leave the house without?
My Springer spaniel, Lancey (like Delancey Street). I take her to work every day.

Joy Division

There’s no shortage of books on Ian Curtis or Joy Division. At this point, everyone recognises Ian Curtis as a certified musical and style icon and he’s revered accordingly. It reached a point when Men.Style (RIP) labelled him as an ‘overinfluencer’. What makes this book different from the others is the fact that Kevin Cummins had captured them from their beginnings as ‘Warsaw’ to their heady heights. And, as you’d expect, there’s more than enough unseen images to make this worth a purchase. It is a first edition collectable copy though, so the £200 price tag shouldn’t be much of a shock. Herman Miller Select Spinning Tops

Herman Miller Select’s own write up of their spinning tops begins with the above quote. Eames was fond of games, as you’ll guess, as a method of relaxation and beginnings to creative work. These tops are inspired by Eames, if not purely in aesthetic then by thought. Beautifully formed from walnut, they are designed by KleinReid. The New York-based firm formed by James Klein and David Reid is best known for its porcelain, but also offers fine work in jewelry and prints. Herman Miller Select’s spinning tops are a rare opportunity to bring home some of KleinReid’s wonderfully crafted work and have a bit of fun at the same time.

There is a difference

In the shop we get the question all the time: why is this "X" amount of dollars. Since 1997 we have specialized in premium brands not luxury/designer brands. Our brands have had and will always have value associated with them because of the materials or fabrics used as well as the type of and country of manufacturing. We can spend hours explaining why a jean costs $200 in our shop, because we care how it's made, who is making it and why they're making it. Below my brother found this brief article and I think it explains it well. Enjoy!!

LUXURY VS. PREMIUM

Luxury goods are needlessly expensive. By needlessly, I mean that the price is not related to performance. The price is related to scarcity, brand and storytelling. Luxury goods are organized waste. They say, "I can afford to spend money without regard for intrinsic value."

That doesn't mean they are senseless expenditures. Sending a signal is valuable if that signal is important to you.

Premium goods, on the other hand, are expensive variants of commodity goods. Pay more, get more. Figure skates made from kangaroo hide, for example, are premium. The spectators don't know what they're made out of, but some skaters believe they get better performance. They're happy to pay more because they believe they get more.

A $20,000 gown is not a premium product. It's not better made, it won't hold up longer, it's not waterproof or foldable. It's just artificially scarce. A custom-made suit, on the other hand, might be worth the money, especially if you're Wilt Chamberlain.

Plenty of brands are in trouble right now because they're not sure which one they represent.

Like it or not, it's Fall time in our state of Wisconsin. There is now the inevitable chill in the air, the days are shorter, and there is the tell tale smell of wood burning fireplaces around every corner.

Nerds of Denim

Forget for a moment that beer, bikes and brats have long defined the city of ( ok, the beer lets not forget so fast) Milwaukee and consider a few facets that are still readily visible on the radar screen.
For instance; scads of Craftman-style bungalows, a bevy of Frank Lloyd Wright representations and a bar on every corner. But what my not be so clear to the eye to even the denizens of their own city are two guys who own their own corner on denim. They call themselves Denim Nerds on the blog for their store Detour but they're just being very humble. I know this cuz they're friends of mine. I also know how meticulous they are when it comes to doing their homework for brands they may potentially carry down the road. At the risk of sounding like a used car salesman, these guys know their denim. Turn a pair inside out and they'll explain to you all about the selvedge, the weave or even a cool little story behind the pocket bags. With a slightly more worldly or let me say more studied online customer, their reach has become global in length as they are now one in a handful of a dialed-in, go-to for denim carrying such brands as: APC, Kicking Mule Workshop, Current/Elliot, Rag and Bone, Nudie and a personal favorite in GitmanVintage (not denim). A heritage shirt company dating back to 1978 with lottsa cool flannels, tattersalls, tartans and checks.

And don't forget that Milwaukee is also home to the National Bowling Headquarters, Gene Wilder as well as Howie Epstein's home town, Flipville Records, Cream City Music (think a whole lotta Gretsch) and the Mars Cheese Castle.

There's nothing sexier than a blazer, a tie, and jeans. And yet most men can't put it together; they either end up with a suit and tie or jeans and T-shirt. Try taking half from one look and half from the other. Chances are you'll get something a little bit cooler.

2.
Men don't shop enough. Being current has everything to do with finding the place you want to shop, whether it's J. Crew or Tom Ford. You have to get off your duff and get out there, because styles evolve. Certain things are classics and they do stay, but men need to keep updating their wardrobe, because change is subtle. For example, denim is getting slimmer. If you're wearing jeans from two years ago, they probably don't look current. Get a new pair of jeans.

3.
Overplucked, overdone men are frightening to me. Women want a man who looks like he takes care of himself but doesn't look like he thinks about it more than she does.

4.
A pressed shirt signals work mode. But a washed-cotton shirt automatically makes you feel more touchable, more approachable. It's effortless. However, if everything is washed—that's not interesting. When washed is paired with a blazer and a tie, it looks amazing.

5.
Most men don't have a clue about tailoring. They hate to ask for directions and they hate to ask if something looks good on them. Learn to ask the salesperson. Ask a woman. Great tailoring always makes guys look better.

6.
Get dressed, then change one element. With a suit, wear a pair of Converse, or take off your dress shirt and put on a chambray button-down instead. You can also do the reverse. Try khakis rolled up with wingtips. Tweaking one thing is an easy way for guys to modernize an outfit, even if they don't know what the hell they're doing.

7.
Three subjects are off-limits to my husband: my mother, my ass, and my age. The worst thing you can do to a woman is to make her feel like she's not beautiful anymore. The best thing is to pay her a compliment.

8.
What women notice are the shoes and the watch. Go for understated elegance, whether it's a vintage Rolex or a classic Timex or a watch that was your grandfather's. It's the same with shoes. I love a pair that look like they've been resoled 10 times.

9.
A giant shirt is not cute. If it feels overly comfortable, it probably doesn't look so good. A simple fit test is to check your shoulder seam. It's designed to be on your shoulder line—not somewhere near it.

10.
We don't need you to be perfect. What we do need is for you to look a little bit more pulled-together. And no pleats, please, not ever, ever, in your life. Ever.

AS you have surely noticed, all- American preppy style has come back for another goround. There is madras everything, button-downs everywhere. Nantucket reds — washed-out pink pants — are the new khakis; Sperry Top-Siders are more common on roof decks than top decks; and the Polo pony and the Lacoste crocodile are now but two of the critters in a zoo of polo shirt insignia.
Lately the trend has taken on a new dimension, via the Internet, with a resurgence of interest in once obscure American brands. Alongside the familiar L. L. Bean duck boots, Brooks Brothers shirts and Ray-Ban Wayfarers, there are Filson duffel bags, Gokey boots, Alden dress shoes, Gitman oxford shirts, Quoddy Trail moccasins, Wm. J. Mills canvas totes — to name but a few. Moribund brands like Southwick and Woolrich are being revived with new designs. And the old-school look has been furthered by popular American fashion labels — small houses like Thom Browne, Band of Outsiders and Benjamin Bixby along with megabrands like J. Crew and Ralph Lauren.

As fashion moments go, this is as all-American as it gets, right?

Actually, no. What makes today’s prepidemic so fascinating is how it is, surprisingly enough, so Japanese. The look has its roots in the United States, to be sure. But the spirit, rigor and execution of today’s prep moment is as Japanese as Sony. One need only flip through the intriguing Japanese book “Take Ivy,” a collection of photographs taken in 1965 by Teruyoshi Hayashida on Eastern college campuses, to get the drift.

“Take Ivy” has always been extremely rare in the United States, a treasure of fashion insiders that can fetch more than $1,000 on eBay and in vintage-book stores. But scanned images from the book have been turning up online in recent months. Ricocheting around the network of sartorially obsessed Web sites and blogs (like acontinuouslean.com and thetrad .blogspot.com), it has aroused renewed interest for its apparent prescience of preppy style. (In the United States, the word preppy came into popular use only in 1970, thanks to the best-selling book and top-grossing movie “Love Story”; and the full flowering of preppy style would not arrive until 1980 with the best-selling “Official Preppy Handbook.”)

But “Take Ivy” was not prescient; it was totally timely, having been commissioned by Kensuke Ishizu, who was the founder of Van Jacket, an Ivy Leagueobsessed clothing line that was a sensation among Japanese teenagers and young men in the early 1960s. Mr. Ishizu was a kind of Ralph Lauren avant la lettre.

“You could have called it a Van look,” recalled Daiki Suzuki, the designer and founder of Engineered Garments (channeling vintage workwear) and the designer of the revamped Woolrich Woolen Mills line (channeling 1950s New England). He remembers “Take Ivy” from his childhood in Japan and how the Ivy look, as it is generally called there, became basic in the ’70s and ’80s, as the craze for American things like Levi’s and Red Wing boots accelerated. In 1989, Mr. Suzuki moved to the United States to work for a large Japanese store scouting for new American designers and obscure brands to import, like White’s Boots from Washington, Russell Moccasin from Wisconsin and Duluth Pack backpacks from Minnesota.

“It’s funny — this authentic Americana, people in the States didn’t care about it at all,” Mr. Suzuki said. “But I would take it back, and everybody would say, ‘Wow, this is really great, what is this?’ Now it’s different. People here like it now.”

HE would know. In 1999, once the Internet began eroding the specialness of his small “Made in the USA” finds, he founded Engineered Garments with the idea of updating vintage American pieces for modern tastes, and for five years he sold the line only in Japan. In the last couple of years Americans have come around, and now the line is a hot seller at Barneys New York.

As curious as this American-export style of business sounds, it is not unusual. Post Overalls, a Japanese- owned line based (and made) in America since 1993, started selling here only this spring. J. Press, the venerable Ivy League clothier founded in New Haven in 1902 and bought by the Japanese fashion giant Kashiyama in 1986, has four modest stores in this country — in Cambridge, Mass.; New Haven; New York; and Washington — but sells roughly six times as much as American made J. Press merchandise in Japan at department stores like Isetan.
The Japanese penchant for Americana is not merely a story of economics; it is a matter of style. It has not been unusual for Japanese men to wear the Ivy look in head-to-toe extremes once unthinkable here — say, a blazer, tie, plaid shorts and knee socks. But given the zeal for American designers like Thom Browne and Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders, who tinker with old-fashioned Americana (and whose lines are made in the United States and are very popular in Japan), extremism is finally becoming fashionable here. A column in this month’s GQ by a to-the-boatshoe- born Cape Codder even inveighs against the trend, labeling it a case of arrivistes going overboard. But whose Ivy look has the more valid claim?

Mr. Suzuki remembers the first time he met Mr. Browne, when they were both starting their lines. “He was wearing a gray suit, button-down shirt, tie, cashmere cardigan and wingtips,” he recalled. “I remember thinking, ‘I’ve never seen an American dress in such Japanese style.’” Mr. Browne is flattered. “It’s amazing,” he said. “The Japanese get the whole perfect American thing better than Americans. They understand that it’s an identifiable style around the world, this American look. We think we appreciate it, but we really don’t, not like they do.”

But that’s changing. Not long ago, men scoffed at dress shorts, let alone wore them to work. Now, they are a summer norm, along with seersucker suits, ribbon belts and horn-rimmed glasses. While some men still prefer it low-key — plain boat shoes, a faded Lacoste shirt with jeans or a khaki suit with a madras tie — even full-on Japanese prep — blue blazer, button-down, bermudas, loafers — can look good if you have the attitude to carry it off.

As fascinating and confusing as this cross-pollination is, the story of ostensible outsiders borrowing from and bettering the holy tartan has an august history. Brooks Brothers, the country’s oldest operating men’s clothier, and the venerable Ray-Ban brand are owned by the Italian Del Vecchio family. Erich Segal, the author of “Love Story,” and Lisa Birnbach, who put together “The Official Preppy Handbook,” are Jewish, as is Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders (who this week won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for men’s wear, in a tie) and, of course, the look’s most famous exponent, Ralph Lauren. And, by the way, those two most prep fabrics, gingham and seersucker, came to the United States, via Britain, from India.

The Look & Lore | Apolis Activism

The gents from the Los Angeles based brand Apolis Activism and I got together during my recent trip to the west coast to shoot the shit, drink German beer and hang out at their studio. Much has been said about Apolis in the press as of late, with the company garnering much praise for their collaborations with Filson, and more recently with vintage boardshorts maker Kanvas by Katin.

Walking into the company’s loft like offices (complete with bunk beds, kitchen and a bathtub full of surf boards) you almost start to feel jealous that you haven’t been invited to hang out sooner. The brothers Raan, Stenn and Shea (not the one pictured below, that is the other Shea) Parton were drawn to the industrial style office space in downtown LA’s “arts district” because of the fact that it is live / work facility. This unique set-up enabled the guys to keep the overhead relatively low while they worked on developing the burgeoning company.

The gentlemen at Apolis Activism represent California well in terms of what their brand has been able to accomplish thus far in terms of the line’s commercial success and the social endeavors put forward. It is refreshing to see a stylish, young and driven group of people trying to make a business succeed and work to help the world at the same time. Respect is due to these guys for doing something that rarely happens anymore — talking the talk and walking the walk.

Have there been any particular cities or regions in the world beyond the normal associations such as Tokyo and Paris which have caught your interest on a fashion level?

Yes, probably Northern European cities, Copenhagen.

Do you think it comes down to their culture?

Yes, that is a good point. Maybe it comes down to their capacity of accepting and they have a good educational system. From the very beginning they are educated in nice buildings. There is something about harmony that make them look well. There isn’t such a great reliance on brands when it comes to fashion.

What are your current thoughts on the current popularity of American contemporary menswear brands?

There are quite a few good things to come from this. Thom Browne is doing a good job in shaping and proportions. Although in the US, they have too many problems with menswear, the American body is just impossible. It’s impossible to have a huge man look elegant, that’s why in Asia they’re usually more handsome because the proportions are better. In America, they are obsessed in sports. Sometimes you go to Los Angeles, big chest and broad shoulders with skinny legs. So I think that’s a problem in menswear. Second problem is Thom Browne and Tom Ford pricing is too expensive.

How do you feel about the statement about A.P.C. regarding “we make noise not clothes”?

It’s true but it’s not true. If you stop making news, you’re “dead”. Sometimes you need to make some news, under the radar noise. Not too loud but you do have to make some noise. It’s very hard to do and sometimes you need to be both within and outside fashion.

We’ve seen a steady move towards fast, accessible fashion such as H&M, Zara and Uniqlo among others, what are your thoughts on that and what effect does it have on a brand like A.P.C.?

It has no effect on A.P.C.. I respect those people cause they have a great sense of logistics and production. But sometimes I hate them because the quality they use is very poor and it is disrespectful to the masses. Sometimes you put something on from them and you stink cause the fiber they use makes you smell “wrong”. While there’s no denying they copy people for their looks, but the problem is they copy too quickly. Patterns aren’t well done and the cuts aren’t good. Their communications relative to their money should hire better photographers and art directors. They have a great capacity for product too bad their efforts are wasted on poor quality offerings. I really mean that but I have a huge respect for them, it’s like running a country what they do. But there’s a lack of thinking.
